Former Military head of state, Yakubu Dan-Yumma Gowon has denied rumors saying that he is dead.
Vanguard reported that the news making rounds that he died on Monday was denied by the retired general over a telephone with them saying that he is alive and wondering where the unfounded rumors started from.
It was also said that he passed away at age 89.
After being contacted by the vanguard editor over the telephone, the general claimed that he was alive and in good health.
Former Minister of State for Education, Gbagi spoke through his chief press secretary, Orusi Kenneth, late on Monday. He disclosed that the general is alive, hale and hearty and currently in London.
He quoted “General Gowon is still much around with us, hale and hearty. He is not in a hurry to go anywhere.”
Findings, however, revealed that the speculations on social media had emerged after a man who bore the name Gowon, Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State, died on Saturday.
Yakubu Dan-Yumma “Jack” Gowon GCFR is a retired Nigerian army general and military leader. As head of state of Nigeria, Gowon presided over a controversial Nigerian Civil War and delivered the famous “no victor, no vanquished” speech at the war’s end to promote healing and reconciliation.
