President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed the need for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue that can no longer be realized on the basis of a federation model since 1974.
He made this statement at the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York where world leaders discussed and debated how to confront the global polycrises and find strategies to accelerate action on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The dispute between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots has been going on for decades despite series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement in the island.
The island has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops responded to a coup backed by Greece’s then-ruling junta by splitting off roughly one third of the island as a zone for Turkish Cypriots.
